My dog's anal gland burst and is bleeding. Does she need antibiotics?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | German Shepherd | Female | spayed | 3 years and 10 months old | 75 lbs

Daisy has been licking and chewing her backend. I believe she busted her anal glands open for the second time. She bled pretty bad last night but using the water hose, I sprayed her off until the bleeding stopped. No longer bleeding, no noticeable pain, no fever, eating and drinking fine, seems healthy. I'm not working right now and less than $100. I don't want her to get infected. What should I do? Can someone prescribe amoxicillin for her?

Hello, I am sorry but on Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach we are not able to prescribe medications. Legally, your dog needs to be physically seen by a vet to get antibiotic treatment. If Daisy has indeed a ruptured anal gland abscess, she will need a course antibiotics to get better. Maybe you can talk to your local vets about a payment plan or try and find a low-cost clinic for Daisy ?

Unfortunately, Blu really needs a vet. I would get an ecollar for when this ruptures. It looks like it is going to rupture soon. This is not only painful and she should get pain meds but she also needs antibiotics for an infection. Here is a website with some suggestions on financial help for veterinary care. http://www.thejerseymoms.com/financial-help-for-veterinary-care/ Thank you for using PetCoach.
