Why is my new kitten having diarrhea after eating canned chicken?

My kitten is very young we just brought it in. We didn't have food at the time so I fed it some chicken from a can. It has gotten diarrhea but seems to be doing okay. What could be the cause of this? I have started to feed it real cat food and formula.

It could be due to the chicken from the canned, it may have upset Betty's stomach. It could also be he has diarrhea, which is common in kittens. I'd have him seen by a vet in the morning to get the cause of his diarrhea diagnosed and treated, and to also get a health check. I hope this helps!

If you switched her food, that could be the cause of her diarrhea. Feed her a bland diet of boiled white meat chicken (no bones) in small amounts several times a day for a couple of days. Then slowly add back in her normal diet. If the diarrhea continues on the bland diet, she starts vomiting food, stops drinking water, starts vomiting water, or becomes very lethargic, she will need to see a vet right away. It's been 3 days since my cat (5 months old) started to eat a new wet food (Weruva)she is on dry food too. She's been having diarrhea since yesterday, about 2 or 3 times a day, she pees about 4 or 5 times a day (maybe more) Is this normal? Thank you
Thank you for submitting your question regarding Skye. She may not be tolerating her new diet well and experiencing diarrhea as a result. If the diarrhea continues into tomorrow, she will need to see her veterinarian. Being so young, it is easy for her to become dehydrated. Of course, there are other causes of diarrhea that could have appeared at the same time as the diet change. Her veterinarian may perform fecal testing and will likey prescribe a medication. In the meantime, encourage her to drink plenty of water. I hope this information helps!

I would be concerned that there may be something else causing her to vomit and have diarrhea. Canned food could cause some diarrhea but I wouldn't expect vomiting for several days as well. And while the formula could be the culprit it still sounds like she needs treatment at this point. At her age I would worry about intestinal parasites, infections or even ingestion of a foreign object. I would recommend seeing a veterinarian for an examination. Young kittens can become dehydrated or hypoglycemic quickly, sonthe sooner you can see a vet the better.

Hi, thanks for using Boop by Petco! Since this all started when you changed to canned food I would change brands and also start adding in dry food. I would also get the kitten dewormed and add in a probiotic like Purina Fortiflora. Be sure to get her off all kitten formula as well. I wish you the best!

Yes, canned food can give kittens diarrhea. I recommend moistening kitten kibble with water to make it softer to eat. Then adding a very small amount of wet kitten food gradually once the stools are firm again should not cause diarrhea. Certainly a sudden change in diet can cause diarrhea in kittens, and it's good that Peaches has no bloat and his stool is getting more solid. I would keep feeding him the small pieces of cooked chicken in with his old brand of food for the next couple of days. If his diarrhea clears up completely, feed him his old brand of food only. Should the diarrhea come back, I would take Peaches into your vet for an exam.

Your kitten may have intestinal parasites, which is the most common cause of diarrhea in young kittens. This can cause vomiting and stomach upset as well. I would recommend taking your kitten into your vet to have a fecal done to check for intestinal parasites. The kitten may also need some antibiotics to help clear up the diarrhea and a medication to help settle his tummy so he starts eating again.

Hello there! I'm sorry to hear that Bella isn't feeling well. Sudden diet changes can cause stomach upset, however I would expect that her symptoms would have started soon after the change and not a while later. While this still may be the issue, vomiting and diarrhea in such a young kitten can be concerning as they can get dehydrated easily, and Bella's lethargy makes me worry about this possibility. Causes may be parasites, a virus, or some other dietary indiscretion (like eating a toxin or a dead animal). I highly recommend that Bella visits a veterinarian if the diarrhea, vomiting, and lethargy continues as it could become dangerous for her small body. The vet will check her temperature, a stool sample for parasites, and may recommend an x-ray or bloodwork if they are concerned about something more sinister (like a bowel obstruction). In the meantime, keep her calm and warm, and offer her water and bland food (like boiled chicken and rice). If she doesn't perk up within the next fe

Congrats on your new kitten, but I'm sorry she is sick! If she is eating a different brand of food from what she was fed at the shelter, this could be the cause of her GI upset (vomiting and diarrhea). Sudden changes in diets cause GI upset in cats, and they need to be transitioned slowly to a new food. I would withhold food for 8 hours, then feed a bland diet of boiled white meat chicken (no bones) in small amounts several times a day for a couple of days. Then slowly add back in her normal diet. If the vomiting continues in the absence of food, she vomits the bland diet, the diarrhea continues on the bland diet, she stops drinking water, starts vomiting water, or becomes very lethargic, she will need to see a vet right away. Thanks for using Boop by Petco! I think that dietary indiscretion as you pointed out could certainly be a possible reason for Eddie to having diarrhea. You can try to switch to a sensitive stomach type diet like the Science Diet healthy development diet for kitties. If no improvement is noted then I recommend that you have him evaluated by your veterinarian for further assessment as other things are possible like intestinal parasites. Good luck!
