My dog keeps licking his incision. Is the liquid a sign of infection?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Small (up to 22lb) | Male | neutered | 6 months and 10 days old | 14.6 lbs

i caught my dog licking himself and i checked to see if it was infected or anything. the redness has went away but i squeezed what i’m guessing is part of the incision site and a little bit of liquid seems to come up. i’m not sure if that’s just his saliva or if it’s infected or anything. he didn’t flinch or anything when i squeezed so i think that’s a good sign but i just wanted to make sure. any ideas? i really hope it isn’t affected due to financial problems.

It does not look infected but it does look like it may open if he continues to lick. You need to get him a cone collar to stop him from licking. You can put some Neosporin on the incision twice a day. DO NOT take the cone off until the incision is completely healed (I would say about 7 days). https://www.petco.com/shop/en/petcostore/product/well-and-good-e-collar
