My vet said to stop my dog's antibiotics early, is that safe to do?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Dachshund | Male | neutered | 18 lbs

My dog's stool had some blood in it, so we took him to the vet. The vet told our dog to take probiotics and antibiotics. We have given him both for the past two days, but he hasn't had a bowel movement for the past full day (he usually has a bowel movement 3-4 times a day). I just called the vet and she had informed us to stop giving him the antibiotics. Is it okay to stop the antibiotics early?

Hello. We definitely do not want to give antibiotics if they are not necessary. Since I do not know what antibiotic your vet prescribed, or what her thinking was, I would follow her directions. Continue the probiotic & then see if Mikey starts to become regular again. If he had a bit of a bacterial infection going on, even a few days of antibiotics can be helpful, but it can take a day or so for the intestines to get back into their regular routine. As long as Mikey is not uncomfortable, just be patient & he should start again soon. Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach.
