My dog has scabs in her ears. What's causing them and what can I do?

Hello, my 3 years old Schnauzer mini has scabs in both her ears and I am concerned as I never saw anything like this before. Can I ask for an advice what to do?

This can be a sign of an ear infection. Luna could be scratching at her ears causing them to bleed then scab. Ear infections in dogs can be caused by yeast or bacteria. I would have her seen by a vet today to get this diagnosed and treated. Any ear problem needs to be checked out promptly by a vet as leaving it untreated can lead to hearing loss. I hope this helps!

This scab could be due to her excessively scratching at her ear. This excessive scratching could be due to an ear infection, allergies, or fleas. If she isn't up to date on her flea medications, I would give her a spot on treatment such as Advantage or Revolution. If she is up to date on her flea medication, I would take her into the vet tomorrow for an exam. The vet can determine if she has a medical cause behind the scab, such as an ear infection or allergies, and can treat accordingly.

My dog has developed these scabs on his ears and I'm not sure what it is.
This appears to be some sort of topical dermatitis. It can be caused by an underlying allergy, a bacterial infection or a fungal infection. You will most likely need to put a topical medication on the sores to help them clear up. You can try some triple antibiotic ointment at home and see if that helps. Kona has tiny little bumps on the inside tips of her ears. They're starting to go away, almost scab over. But we aren't sure what it could be. She has black ears so a picture isn't really showing the bumps
Scabs or crusts on the inside of the ears can be due to mange mites (if the areas are itchy then she should be checked for this), trauma due to fly bites if she is outdoors for long periods of time, or ear margin dermatosis or seborrhea. A veterinary exam can give you more information about what could be causing the problem. Some cases of ear margin dermatosis may require antibiotics to treat secondary infection. It is controlled with things like special shampoos (benzoyl peroxide or salicylic acid), supplements like fatty acids and vitamin A, and sometimes medications such as pentoxifylline.

My wife and I discovered on our dog Luna 2 scabs 1 located on the side of her ear, the other was located on the top of head. We do know if there are tic bites or mosquito bites she has been scratching on those locations. She has been running, playing
If they are scabs from tick or mosquitoes then there is not much to do besides try to prevent more from happening. I would, however, call your veterinarian and ask what type of tick borne infections are in your area and what you should watch for. Also, make sure Luna is on heartworm prevention as it is transmitted by mosquitoes. I also worry that she may have scabs from self trauma from scratching if she has an ear infection, and those are often hard to find without a veterinarian doing a full otoscopic exam. I would encourage you to have her evaluated by your veterinarian if the itching continues. Best of luck and thank you for using Pet Coach.

My dog has black scabs on his ears. And when they come off his ear bleeds. He also has hair missing on his ears. It's only his ears, nowhere else.
It's probably due to an ear infection, Ear infections are very common in dogs, it is usually cause by either yeast or bacterial disease. the treatment is usually simple and straight forward, you will have to take Jeter to the vet and get the ears checked, then a prescription ear drops will be prescribed according to the infectious agent.

My dog has black scabs on the tops of both of her ears. It doesnt go away, and she itches quite a bit. She also has small black spots on the inside of her ears
The black scabs may be due to her itching at her ears a lot. The inside of Zeda's ears look red, and she may have an ear infection, or ear mites that are causing her to itch. The black spots can also be a sign of an ear infection or ear mites. She needs to be seen by a veterinarian soon. The vet will be able to look down her ears with an otoscope, and take samples if there are signs of infection, so that she can be treated with the correct medication. This will hopefully provide Zeda with some relief.

If it really is just a scab, then I would leave it alone, since pulling it off will hurt and may cause bleeding. Scabs are there to protect the new tissue that is growing underneath. Scabs can often be confused by small moles, ticks, small papillomas or warts, or even a tumor. When Sven is calm and sitting near you, look and see if it looks like a scab (usually flat) or something else. If it is something else, then you should have it checked out by a vet.

This presentation could be due to a trauma or localized spot of skin infection (likely to be caused by bacteria or fungal). A check up, appropriate disinfection and possibly antibiotics or antifungal meds (oral, topical or in a shampoo formulation) are needed to solve the problem. Disinfection can possibly be started at home with very diluted hibiscrub or betadine or salted water baths. Buster collar is useful as well to avoid any scratching (as you have used). My dog has what feels like scabs on the tip of his ears but the hair also pulls out real easy. He doesn't have ear mites. What could I do about it?
I would recommend doing testing on the ears to find out what is causing the scabs. If your pet is outside a lot, then flea bites are possible and it is recommended to purchase flea bite repellent at your local pet store to start, followed by topical triple antibiotic to get the scabs to heal. If your pet is kept mostly indoors, two common causes of this are demodexx mites or a yeast infection. Also another condition called ear margin vasculitis could be the cause. Ear margin vasculitis is a spontaneous condition where the vessels at the ear tip margin become inflamed creating a scabby appearance to the skin. Since all 3 of these look very similar it is important to get testing done in the form of a skin scrape/cytology and/or skin biopsy because each is treated so differently and it takes out a lot of the guess-work. Therefore scheduling an appointment with your vet is needed for proper diagnosis and treatment.

2 year old female staff. bull terrier. Itching at left year causing scabbing and light bleeding, last night appearance of rash or possible redness from scratching, and the past two mornings she’s vomited once but has otherwise been acting and eating
If Daisy has been scratching at her ear excessively causing bleeding, this is a sign of an ear infection. Ear infections in dogs can be caused by ear mites, yeast, or bacteria, so you will need to make an appointment with her vet to get the cause diagnosed in order for her to receive the correct treatment. Give your vet a call today to make an appointment for her. As for the vomiting, it could be she has an upset stomach from a dietary change or eating something rotten, or a mild GI illness. I can give you a home remedy for that to see if it helps. Withhold food for 12-24 hours, then feed a bland diet of boiled white meat chicken (no bones) and white rice in small amounts several times a day for a couple of days. Then slowly add back in her normal diet. If the vomiting continues in the absence of food, she vomits the bland diet, develops diarrhea, stops drinking water, starts vomiting water, or becomes very lethargic, she will need to see a vet right away.
