Why is my cat losing hair and weight, eating more, and not playing?

My cat has been progressively losing hair for the past month, he has lost a ton of weight even though he eats twice as much, he never plays anymore instead he just sits ( very uncomfortablely) for hours on end, I have no idea so i’ve downloaded reddit for answers, please help....

This is concerning, and weight loss despite eating can be a sign of a medical condition like diabetes. The hair loss could be due to fleas, mites, or allergies. You need to have Bean seen by a vet for these issues, and I recommend getting blood work and a urinalysis done. I'd take him into a vet today.

Cats that are losing weight despite eating often have a thyroid condition although there could be other reasons like diabetes or kidney disease which are also common. I suggest you have Simba to your vet for an exam and some blood testing.

This isn't normal. Coreilli could have a serious disease like heart disease, diabetes, hyperthyroidism, kidney failure, or even cancer causing her symptoms. You need to take her into a vet first thing in the morning.

Depending on whether or not there is any itchiness to accompany the hair loss says a lot about the possible cause of the problem. If there is itchiness, there is likely a primary dermatologic condition being caused by either allergies, parasites, or an immune mediated process. If there is no itchiness, the cause is most likely nutritional or of an endocrine origin. Given the fact that the vet you saw gave a steroid shot, I imagine that he was under the impression that itchiness was a major component. If your kitty was unresponsive to steroids, there may be other alternative drugs and therapies available but all of which will require you to visit with the veterinarian. If there is not any itchiness, I encourage you to seek out some blood work to check for various endocrine diseases including thyroid disease and Cushing's disease. If you haven't already done this, you should also consider obtaining a skin scraping and a cytology of the areas that are affected on the body. I realize

It could be she has a medical condition like hyperthyroidism causing the hair loss as well as the increase in drinking and weight loss, or she could be suffering from something like a skin infection causing the hair loss, and a medical condition like diabetes causing the weight loss and increased thirst. I would take her into the vet for blood work or a urinalysis. The vet can diagnose what is causing her symptoms, and can teat her. I hope this helps!

Hi, thanks for using Boop by Petco! Lil Bub is very handsome! I recommend starting with an exam with your Vet. I would test (or test again) for Feline leukemia and FIV. Sadly we have to consider FIP (feline infectious peritonitis) as a reason for a poor appetite and weight loss in a young pure bred cat. FIP has no cure and is devastating. Also there is no good test for it. I would bring a stool sample to check for intestinal parasites and would likely deworm him anyway even if the test is negative. I would recommend full blood work. If the above is normal then I would do an belly ultrasound next to look for IBD. If his intestines are thick I would send out a B12, foalte, TLI, PLI to check for maldigestion/malabsorption. IBD is treated with a hypoallergenic diet and steroids. I hope this helps and I wish you and Lil Bub the best!

Cats who are thin despite eating well who also have areas of baldness can be suffering from an endocrine disease called hyperthyroidism. I recommend getting his thyroid levels tested by a veterinarian who does this type of testing.

Hair loss can have many causes in cats- skin infection such as a bacterial infection, allergy such as to food or a flea allergy (especially if Simba is not on any flea preventative) or fungal infection like ringworm can all be causes. Sometimes anxiety can cause cats to lick off their fur but this is typically a diagnosis that is made after all other health conditions are ruled out first. The weight loss could be due to due to simply eating less (this would be a good thing if Simba was previously overweight). Of course, weight loss can also be caused by many different underlying health condition such as certain infections, hyperthyroidism, liver, kidney disease, certain cancers and other endocrine disease. I would recommend Simba see his veterinarian soon for an evaluation. Your veterinary may take a skin scraping and hair sample from the area of hair loss and may recommend running blood work or other diagnostics as necessary. I hope

IF she isn't eating properly and losing weight, there is definitely something wrong with her, if she eats the wet food with great appetite, then the dry food must be the issue and that could be either due to a teeth disease or a partial GI blockage. either way you need to take her to the vet ASAP, she will need to be checked, especially her mouth, if nothing unusual is found during the physical examination the next step will be a blood test to try and find out what is wrong.

Sudden weight loss is always a very big warning light that should not be taken lightly, it's usually a sign of an internal disease that needs to be investigated, i strongly recommend taking him to the vet in order to get it checked, he will need to have a blood test done and possibly an xray as well in order to attempt to diagnose the reason for these symptoms.

No, this isn't normal for a senior cat. There could be a medical illness behind this weight loss and shedding hair, such as hyperthyroidism. This can be common in senior cats, and it can be treated either medically or surgically. I recommend taking Sino into the vet first thing on Monday for a physical exam, geriatric blood panel, and urinalysis. Using these tests, the vet can diagnose what is causing her weight and hair loss, and can discuss treatment options with you. Good luck, I hope this helps!
