Is my cat's increased phenobarbital dose causing lethargy and staggering?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Mixed Breed | Female | spayed | 10 lbs

I recently increased my 10 pound cat‘s phenobarbital from 16.2 mg twice a day 216.2 mg 3 times a day due to a prolonged seizure episode. She is of course very lethargic now, seems to stagger a little when walking, seems despondent, seems to possibly not recognize us now, but we’re not sure about that. Is this dosage too much to tolerate, at least temporarily? This is the third day of the increased dosage. (My bed is not open on weekends, so we won’t be able to see her until tomorrow. Thanks.

Was this increase something that your Vet suggested? If not I would absolutely drop the dose back down to what was prescribed. Giving too much can be dangerous. Always consult your vet before changing any medication doses. If your cat gets worse you should go to an emergency vet right away.
