My dog is vomiting bile, not eating, and losing hair. What to do?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Bichon Frise | Female | 2 years and 4 months old | 14.5 lbs

I brought my dog to a new vet for check up after moving to a new state. She was having some itching and allergy issues so the vet gave her an allergy shot. After a few days she began puking yellow bile and I noticed 2 patches of hair loss behind her legs today. It's been 4 days of increased bile puking and yesterday she skipped meals and did not eat. Vet says we need to do an x-ray. I am very concerned at the timeline of her sickness and terrible reviews at this vet. What should I be doing?

If you don't care for that vet, find another. I think the vomiting and hair loss/itching are unrelated. For vomiting, common causes would include dietary intolerance or indiscretion, food allergy, intestinal parasites, GI blockage, gastroenteritis, bacterial or viral infection, IBD, pancreatitis, among others. She likely needs blood work and/or x-rays to see what could be causing it. For the hair loss and itching, the most common causes would be a combination of fleas, flea allergies, and food allergies. Clementine should be on a monthly flea preventative, and may need a special diet once the vomiting is resolved.
