My dog drags his leg after paw fracture. Is it healed properly?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | German Shepherd | Male | unneutered | 1 year and 1 month old | 40 lbs

My dog his paw fractured and the doc treated it with a bandage for 14 days. Then he caught the distemper virus and now is left with muscle tics. He doesnt use his hind leg( the one with the fractured paw) does that automatically mean he didnt heal properly? Or is he afraid to out any weight on it? He gently places it in the floor when sitting or standing but when running will drag the leg....How do i help him?

It likely did not heal properly. You need to take him back to the vet for an x-ray. It is very sad to leave him like this. I'm sure he is in pain. He is too young to be left dragging that leg around. If you are worried about cost I suggest you try this clinic: https://www.affordableanimalhospitalwhittier.com/

Hi there and thanks for posting on Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! It is hard to say without examining Chance what may be the cause of his limping but I can offer a few possibilities and next steps. It may be he fractured his paw (from the accidental stepping), he may have an ACL tear or another ligament injury. I would recommend placing an ice pack on the leg ( be sure the pack is in between a towel) for 15 mins three times daily until Chance can see a veterinarian. He may need an x-ray to rule out a fracture or ligament tear. He may need anti-inflammtory medications to help decrease inflammation and pain associated with the injury. I would recommend getting Chance seen by a veterinarian today or tomorrow. Thanks for posting and best of luck to you and Chance!
