Kitten has blood in poop. Is it from switching food too fast?

I’ve had my kitten for about over a week now. Yesterday I noticed small red flakes in kitten poop and today there was a more blood. Will switching kitten food not gradually cause blood in kitten poop ?

Yes that could cause this. But it could also be caused by other things like intestinal worms or a stomach illness. I'd have Kiki sen by a vet in the morning to have this diagnosed and treated. Best of luck.

Thanks for using Boop by Petco! The change is diet is very likely the cause though other things like parasites cannot be ruled out. Blood in the stool is an indication to have her evaluated by a veterinarian. If this continues to be an issue in the next 24-48 hours, have her evaluated by a veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. Hopefully she will improve on her own. I would recommend a trip to the vet because blood in the stool is not normal. We can have a variety of reasons for it, including parasites, inflammatory bowel disease, food intolerance, and more. The safest course of action in a cat this young is to have her examined and bring a stool sample along with you if you have one that is recent (past 24 hours) for the vet to test.

A sudden change in diet can lead to bloody stool, and that may be why there was blood in Icy's poop. Keep an eye on her for now, and if you continue to see blood in her poop, have her seen by a vet. Best of luck.

Blood in the stool can occur secondary to food sensitivity, but it can also be a sign of parasites or even occur secondary to stress, so I'd recommend seeing your veterinarian first to rule out these medical problems. Unfortunately if you're switching foods frequently it can be difficult to determine which is or isn't helping, so if your vet recommends a food trial you should stick to one specific food for at least 6 to 8 weeks before deciding if it is or isn't helping.

The diet is a possibility although it is a little to be associated with that. Typically diet changes will affect them within 7 days of change. It can be inflammation or colitis from an inflammatory bowel or bacterial population problem IF there is no diarrhea or vomiting and she still acts fine, then I would get a feline probiotic to add to the diet. This can help replenish the normal bacteria and can take up to 2 weeks for the max benefit. If the blood continues though I would get her checked and see if you need a prescription hypoallergenic diet or GI formula diet to help

There can be a lot of causes of diarrhea in kittens. Typically the most common cause is a parasitic infection but bacterial or a viral infection could also be possibilities. Rapid change of the food can also cause diarrhea. I would recommend Kitten see her veterinarian soon for an exam and fecal test to check for causes. He may need antibiotics, anti-parasitics, or other medications to help solve the diarrhea.

The most common cause for this in a kitten that otherwise feels good is intestinal parasites. You can try an OTC dewormer from a petstore or take Litchi in to the vet for evaluation. Other possible causes could include a bacterial or viral infection (such as Panleukopenia), dietary intolerance, bleeding disorder, etc.

Congrats on the new family member. I would agree with you that the new food could have caused some indigestion. Typically, if you decide to switch any animal's diet, the best method of doing this is a gradual switch over at least a week's time. Mix in the original food with the new food and little by little transition completely over. You can try to do this as of now. If the soft stool continues or if there is any more blood, I would pull food completely for 12-24 hours. After this, provide a very bland diet like boiled boneless chicken or boiled hamburger, as well as rice. Do this or 2-4 days until the bowel movements seem to be regular once again. Another cause of bleeding in the feces, especially in very young animals, are intestinal parasites. If Love Bug hasn't been dewormed yet, I would speak with your vet about having her feces looked at under a microscope and checked out. She may require a short series of dewormer. Hopefully you and Love Bug will figure things out. L
