My Yorkie ate moldy dog food and is sick. Could it be contaminated?

Hi. Toy Yorkshire Terrier aged 6. No health issues . Eats dried food .opened a new bag at start of week expiry 2021. Hes had a bowl and half since Monday. He was sick yesterday as and had loose stools. We noticed now today his food sticks of chemicals and is mouldy. It is stored no place near chemicals and dry in kitchen. We have binned it have new food. Hes eaten chicken tonight and is drinking but we are worried it may have been contaminated... didn't notice smell on Monday

Poor Freddie! That is awful about his food! I would contact the company to let them know this happened to the food, you may be able to get a refund. Keep him on the chicken diet for a few days, and add some white rice to it. If he keeps vomiting or having loose stool, have him seen by the vet. I hope this helps!

Continue giving the rice and boiled chicken for the next 4-7 days and then slowly transition him back to his normal diet. You can also try adding in 1-2 tsp of canned pumpkin (not the pie filling) in to his food daily to see if this helps also. If he is still having diarrhea after 2-3 days, then it’s best to get Harley seen by your local vet for a proper exam, fecal exam (to check for intestinal parasites), and bloodwork should be considered if he hasn’t had any in the last 6 months to a year. Underlying liver disease and gallbladder disease can cause subtle signs like loose stool in pets, so it’s best to get things checked out if things don’t get better. Best of luck with Harley and I hope his diarrhea improves soon. Take care.

I think my dog ate moldy dog food that has been wet and left out. He is slightly lethargic and his head feels a little hot. What should I do ?
Poor Wyatt! It sounds like he is a bit sick from eating the moldy dog food, which would make him lethargic and might give him a fever. The risk of eating moldy food is that he could get toxicity from it. I would monitor him for now for signs of toxicity, which include vomiting, agitation, walking like he is drunk, tremors, seizures, and fever. If you see any of those signs, take him into a vet right away. Check his temperature now, and if it's above 103F, he will need to see a vet now. In the meantime, feed him a bland diet of boiled white meat chicken (no bones) and white rice in small amounts several times a day for a couple of days. Then slowly add back in his normal diet.

Thank you for contacting Boop by Petco with your question about Milktea. Poor boy! It looks like there is some hair in his vomit. I can give you a home remedy to see if that helps. Withhold food for 12-24 hours, then feed a bland diet of boiled white meat chicken (no bones) and white rice in small amounts several times a day for a couple of days. Then slowly add back in his normal diet. If the vomiting continues in the absence of food, he refuses to eat the bland diet, he vomits the bland diet, develops diarrhea, stops drinking water, starts vomiting water, or becomes very lethargic, he will need to see a vet right away. Make sure he is drinking approriately. Wait 4-6 hours and offer abbot of chicken and rice again. If he continues to have diarrhea, has blood in his stool or begins vomiting he needs to be seen immediately. Yorkie s can become dehydrated fairly quickly as they are so little.

My mini Yorkie got ahold of uncooked hamburger patty last Saturday. 6 days later he is still having diarrhea. Other than the diarrhea, he seems fine. What should I do?
Poor guy. You can try a few things for the next 24-48 hrs to see if this helps normalize his stools. He likely has a dysbiosis condition, imbalance of his normal gut flora, which is caused by eating the raw meat. Him not vomiting or showing lethargy is a really good sign that he can recover well from this. 1) A bland diet of boild plain chicken and rice or fully cooked lean hamburger meat and rice or cottage cheese fed to him for the next 3-4 days, then slowly transition him back to his normal diet. 2) Probiotic- get Culturelle over the counter ar your local pharmacy and put it in his food daily for the next 7 days. I would not recommend any other probiotic than this one because it is most compatible to pet formulated probitiocs sold through your vet 3) 1-2 tsp's (teaspoons) of canned pumpkin (not the pie filling) in his food daily for the next 7 days If he is not showing any improvement to his stools within 24-48 hrs, then its best to get him seen by your vet for a short cours

If Maley is still acting ill, can't settle, or seems very painful or tender in her abdomen, I would be concerned about something such as pancreatitis or continued illness from getting into the trash. I would bring her into your vet or an ER clinic, especially if she is still showing signs of not feeling well, is painful, bloated, or experiencing a lot of discomfort.

However I strongly recommend you take him to the vet since it has been going on for so many days and it is getting the worse. The dark color may indicate digested blood. Oreo needs to be examined by the veterinarian today. Any blood in the stool or vomit always require a veterinarian visit because this can indicate something serious like a foreign object in the stomach (although other causes are possible). Additionally, diarrhea that continues beyond 24 hours often has bacterial shifts in the gut that will make matters worse regardless of the initial cause. Make sure to bring in a sample of fresh stool. The doctor will check him for parasites and bacterial over growth. Other diagnostics may also be recommended pending the history and physical exam. Many times a bland diet can help and then a slow, gradual introduction to the normal food can be done. A bland diet can consist of 25% boiled white meat chicken and 75% boiled white rice.
