My cat is vomiting, chewing, and has a loud stomach. What's wrong?

My cat moves his mouth like he is chewing gum but only when we are interacting with him and he has been vomiting slightly digested food but only very early in the morning and lately I have noticed his belly is a little louder than usual

Thank you for contacting Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach with your question about Russell. Poor boy. If he's only moving this mouth like this when you interact with him, it may be his way of showing he's enjoying the interaction. I'd be concerned about that if it was all the time. Vomiting early in the morning can be due to acid reflux. I would have him seen by a vet for this vomiting. I hope this helps!

Thank you for contacting Boop by Petco with your question about Cheshire. It could be from an upset stomach, and I can give you a home remedy for him to see if that helps. Withhold food tonight, then feed a bland diet of boiled white meat chicken (no bones) in small amounts several times a day for a couple of days. Then slowly add back in his normal diet. If the vomiting continues in the absence of food, he refuses to eat the bland diet, he vomits the bland diet, develops diarrhea, stops drinking water, starts vomiting water, or becomes very lethargic, he will need to see a vet right away. I hope this helps!

Hi, thanks for using Boop by Petco! Poor Elvis! I wonder if Elvis is actually coughing. When cats are coughing they sound like they are going to bring up a hairball or vomit but don't or white foam comes up. Coughing in cats commonly indicates asthma. Check his breathing when he is at rest or asleep ideally. If he is breathing with belly effort or his respiratory rate is greater than 40/min he should go to a Vet immediately. I am worried about Elvis, if he is truly trying to vomit possible causes are: foreign body obstruction (requiring surgery to remove), pancreatitis, metabolic condition like kidney failure, viral or bacterial infections, intestinal disease (IBD or cancer). Since he is not eating and is lethargic I recommend taking Elivis to the vet for an exam, blood work and possibly X-rays. If you can video tape the attempting to vomit episodes it may be helpful for your Vet. I hope this helps and I wish Elvis a speedy recovery!

Vomiting or regurgitation can be caused by many conditions primarily gastrointestinal in nature such gastroenteritis and gastrointestinal foreign body ingestion and obstruction or other conditions such as pancreatitis or kidney disease. Cats do not vomit from not getting their way. I recommend that you have him evaluated by your veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. Likely diagnostics to be performed include abdominal imaging and general bloodwork. Treatment would be based on the findings. Good luck and have a great day!

Hi. There are many possible causes for vomiting from primary GI to secondary GI causes. If blood work or x-rays didn't get us many answers, I would move forward with an ultrasound as that much vomiting isn't normal. I would also recommend asking your veterinarian for a prescription bland diet during this time. Good luck

Hi there! Thanks for using Boop by Petco! The signs that you describe indicate nausea (licking lips) and she is vomiting and both of these are concerning. These can be seen with a variety of conditions such as pancreatitis, chronic kidney disease, foreign body ingestion and obstruction, among many other possibilities. I recommend that you have your veterinarian take a look at Tina for further assessment and treatment based on findings. My cat (Storm) just vomited all of his food up. Now he is just laying down staring at me. When I try to sit by him or hold him, he growls at me. He never does this. His heartbeat is also really fast. Should I be worried?

Unfortunately, these signs are rather vague, and can be caused by a number of conditions including hair balls, intestinal parasites, inappropriate diet, and other more serious conditions such as certain cancers. I recommend having Mel seen by his vet to determine exactly what is going on. You can try feeding a bland diet at home, making sure he gets plenty of water, and grooming Mel to limit hair balls. My cat vomit two times today but hasn’t had a vomiting problem before? He’s making A LOT more noise than usual and meows loudly. He meowed in my face and tried to nip me once. He’s been a bit more active while meowing. Is he okay?
Vomiting and increased vocalizations can sometimes indicate pain or distress. This could be due to GI upset, underlying illness, etc. If the symptoms continue, worsen, or you see additional issues such as increased vomiting, attempting to urinate or defecate but can't, loss of appetite, etc, then it would be best to seek veterinary care ASAP to find the underlying issue.

I think your theory makes some sense - it's possible that some oral pain is changing his behavior when he's eating. It is also not unusual for some cats to eat their food too quickly, and some cats do better with dry food as compared to wet or vice versa. The burping however sounds more like he might have some stomach upset. This could be from a food sensitivity, parasites, or something like inflammatory bowel disease. I would recommend making an appointment with your veterinarian for an examination and to discuss testing if indicated.
