My dog's bladder stone returned quickly after surgery. Is this normal?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Pomeranian | Male | neutered | 9 years old | 17 lbs

A new fairly large bladder stone was discovered today at my dog’s two week post op check up for his cystotomy. Is this normal? I was told all stones were gone on post op X-ray. This was his fourth cystotomy and he has had both kinds of stones in the past (results aren’t back yet from this surgery). This new stone is a decent size and attached to the bladder wall. Im concerned with how quickly it has developed and what I should do.

The recurrence was very quick indeed. Sometimes such a fast recurrence is related to bacterial infection that is sitting deep in the bladder wall. For that reason we often test the stones for presence of bacteria, or we take a sample of the bladder wall to be tested for presence of infection. I assume that test was done, but if not it would be really worth to put Zucchini on a long course of antibiotics. In some dogs it does make a big difference in relation to recurrence of bladder stones.
