Is my dog's heartworm treatment effective despite some pills spit up?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Medium (23 - 60lb) | Female | spayed | 3 years and 3 months old | 158 lbs

My dog had a strong positive stage 1 heartworm test in January this year. She has been on the preventative, completed the doxycycline, and now the 3 shots for the adult worms. I caught her spitting up some of the doxycycline pills though. She is due to be tested for the baby worms next month. Are the odds in her favor that they are dead? Also are the odds in her favor that she will be heartworm negative in 6 months?

It sounds like you have gone through the appropriate steps and I suspect the parasites are now cleared. Of course you still need to go through the testing to be sure but this protocol generally works very effectively. Congrats! The hardest part is over! Remember though to continue her on strict rest until your veterinarian clears her for normal activity again. I hope this helps.
