Why won't my cat eat dry food after dental surgery and sleeps a lot?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Domestic Shorthair | Male | neutered | 15 years and 2 months old | 9.9 lbs

What is wrong with my cat? He got dental surgery 3 weeks ago but now he won’t eat his dry food. He’ll eat wet food but he is eating less than a 3 ounce can a day. He seems like he’s sleeping a lot but it’s hard to tell since I’m not usually home during the day. When I try to feed him a piece of dry food it looks like he tries to bite it but can’t and it falls out.

This definitely sounds concerning. Sometimes the tooth extraction site can become infected, or in some rare situations nerves in the mouth can be affected by dental surgery. It's also possible that the dental is unrelated and that Danny has developed a kidney problem or other disease causing a decrease in appetite. I would definitely recommend a vet visit.
