Irish Setter: Can I prevent osteosarcoma and bloat with gastropexy?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Hello. I am debating getting an irish setter. I recently learned though they are prone to osteosarcoma which is a fear of mine for a dog to get. Do you know of any ways to prevent this or decreasing the chance? Also since they are prone to bloat I was considering getting an gastropexy on future irish setter, would you also recommend that?

Unfortunately I'm not aware of anything preventative for osteosarcoma. It does seem to run in certain lines, so you could ask if your breeder knows if there are any dogs who have developed osteosarcoma in your potential puppy's line. A prophylactic gastropexy would be a good idea - I often recommend performing the procedure at the time of spay or neuter.
