Are bleach fumes harmful to pets? What symptoms should I watch for?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Australian Shepherd | Female | spayed | 35 lbs

I used a lot of bleach to clean my laundry room todays and this is where my pets sleep. I aired it out properly, or so I thought, but i feel I was nose blind. I sent my pets to bed, 2 dogs and a cat, and I came back in to check on them later and it smelled of bleach still. I’m afraid that the fumes will harm them, and may irritate their paws if there was any bleach left (it was diluted but still). Please let me know if I should be worried and what to look out for!

Bleach is irritant to the airways, to the eyes and skin. First of all, you have to check your pets if they don't have any breathing difficulties and they don't have watering eyes. Secondly, you should check the paws for redness and any sores. If they do have red skin or watering eyes, you should clean that areas in warm water. If they have any signs of airways irritation (sneezing, coughing, panting) you will need to take them to your local vets.
