My quick-eating puppy's tummy bloats, shivers, hiccups. Normal?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Dachshund (Miniature Smooth Haired) | Female | unspayed | 1 month and 28 days old

Suspected bloat? My puppy is a very quick eater, and the first day we had her she had a large bloated stomach after eating. We took her to the vet and they said to just keep an eye on her. It settled, however every couple of days she is getting a larger tummy again and sometimes shivers. We halved her meal sizes, and even feed her these in quarters, but she still experiences funny tummy with the odd retch and frequent hiccups. Is this something we need to be worried about?

Puppies are funny, and when their stomachs are full, they look really bloated. It is important that part of the issue isn't caused by intestinal parasites, so I would recommend a dewormer. Then you can divide her daily food ration into 3 meals. You can also use a special bowl or treat toy to get Bonnie to slow down.
