My rabbit has Snuffles. Can Petco give me antibiotics without a vet?

I believe my rabbit has Snuffles. Am I able to obtain a prescription for the antibiotics?

Not from us unfortunately, it's illegal for us to write prescriptions without seeing Patch in person. You need to have her seen by a vet to get her diagnosed and get her a prescription. Please take her into a vet today.

\unfortunately we cannot prescribe any medications through this service. your rabbit seems to be suffering from a blocked tear duct, probably due to an upper respiratory infection (pasteurelosis), you need to take him to the vet as he needs a course of antibiotics, he will also likely need to have his tear duct deblocked/flushed under a very short general anesthesia.

If your PetCO has a veterinary facility you can bring your cat for an exam and then the veterinarian there will prescribe the appropriate medication. I am afraid antibiotics can only be prescribed after a veterinary exam.

Your rabbit is probably suffering from an upper respiratory infection also known as Snuffles, unfortunately you cannot treat this at home without getting the proper antibiotics from the vet, you will have to take Rica to the vet for that.

Hello. Thank you for using Boop by Petco. It looks like Ruby has an upper respiratory infection called "snuffles". You need to get her to a vet for an exam and treatment. She will need antibiotics to get this clear up and to keep it from getting worse. Snuffles is caused by a very aggressive bacteria and it can be fatal. As with any infection, the sooner treatment is administered, the sooner the eye will recover. Mild cases of snuffles may resolve without treatment. It can also lead to more serious infection if not treated promptly. It is also very contagious, so if you have other rabbits, it is best to quarantine Lola. Do your best to get Lola seen by your veterinarian as soon as you can. If your vet cannot see her, consider a different veterinary clinic just this once. It certainly sounds like snuffles (Pasteurellosis) but it is impossible to know for sure without seeing Kookie. Since Pasteurella can cause septicemia which may result in sudden death, it is important that you have Kookie seen by your veterinarian. Antibiotic treatment is often difficult and needs to continue for 6-8 weeks. Also, many antibiotics are ineffective against this disease because of an increase in resistant strains. Culture and sensitivity testing is therefore recommended to determine the best antibiotic to use. Keep in mind that there are other infectious diseases that can cause the same or similar clinical signs including some viral diseases. Your veterinarian will be able to examine Kookie, diagnose what is going on and recommend appropriate treatment.

You are correct, she is probably suffering from an upper respiratory infection (Snuffles), she will need a course of antibiotic (Baytril) and some antibiotic eye drops for about 3 weeks, you can go to any regular vet, they can prescribe these medications for Berry.

Hello, and thank you for your question. It sounds like Snuggles has all the right medications to help resolve his Snuffles infection. I would give it a few more days to see improvement. If still no improvement by then, I would recommend taking him back to the vet. They may want to take a culture sample of his nasal discharge to check exactly what bacteria is present, or decide to switch his antibiotic type altogether. X-rays may also be recommended to rule out pneumonia, which is more serious and more difficult to treat. I hope this helps, and that Snuggles feels better soon!

Thanks for your question about Sunu. Snuffles is typically a generic term for a single type of bacteria- this is usually present in most rabbits. If you are unable to take your rabbit to a veterinarian, then you can attempt supportive care at home. This would include a high quality diet, a well ventilated area for the enclosure, and keeping Sunu’s face clean. Please do not give Sunu any human medications at home, as many are harmful to our furry friends. I hope that gices you a place to start, and that Sunu gets better soon.

Biscuit has been in baytril for 6 months for snuffles is there another antibiotic I could look into or ask my vet about as they are saying there really isn’t anything else can try ?
Snuffles (Pasteurellosis) is very difficult to completely resolve in rabbits. The infection may go dormant, however it is likely to be with Biscuit for life. Baytril is one of the most commonly prescribed antibiotics in rabbits and one of the few that can safely be used. Ciprofloxacin and Trimethoprim Sulfa are two other antibiotics that could be dispensed by your vet. You can have your veterinarian swab Biscuit's nose or collect a sample of discharge to submit for culture and sensitivity. This may identify any other bacteria as well as the most effective antibiotic to use in treatment. Until then, continue to medicate him as directed by your veterinarian, make sure he is eating and drinking normally and keep him warm and as stress free as possible. https://www.petcoach.co/article/snuffles-pasteurellosis
