Why is my dog's back rash bleeding, smelly, and losing hair?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Medium (23 - 60lb) | Male | neutered | 10 years and 11 months old | 40 lbs

My dog has a rash on his back, he has dry skin and flakes in that same area but in the past couple of days it’s been bleeding, there’s been a lot of hair loss and smells pretty bad.

It sounds like Zorro is developing a skin infection - that's the most likely source of the smell and flaking. Zorro needs to be seen by the vet as soon as possible - mild skin infections can sometimes be treated at home, but with a strong odor he likely needs a course of antibiotics which needs to come from your vet. Here's an article on hot spots, or superficial skin infections. https://www.petcoach.co/article/how-to-treat-and-prevent-hot-spots-on-dogs/
