Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Large (61lb +) | Female | spayed | 70 lbs
My dog had a torn cruica ligament but had an operation about a year ago and had been much better however today she has been limping and will now not put any weight on that leg, can we give her anything to help with the pain and what would you suggest doing now?

Poor Lexi! I'm sorry to hear that she's limping. Unfortunately, there are no over-the-counter pain medications that are safe for use in dogs, so there isn't anything you can give her at home today. I would recommend keeping her as calm and quiet as possible to avoid aggravating her injury further, and taking her to the vet tomorrow for an exam to find out what's going on.

Poor Lex. This tells me something is causing her paw pain. I recommend resting her for the next 48 hours. No running, jumping, or playing. Take her out to toilet on a leash, and bring her right back in when she's done. If she still appears painful after this time, then I would take her into the vet for an exam. The vet can diagnose where the pain is coming from, and can dictate a treatment plan for it. She may also benefit from some pain medications, which the vet can prescribe. Please do not give her any human pain medications, as many are toxic to dogs and can be fatal if given. Best of luck.

There can be many things causing the swelling and pain in her paw, including infection, broken toe bone, soft tissue sprain, or torn ligaments. I would recommend that Lexi get checked out by a vet as soon as possible. The vet will do a thorough exam, and may recommend x-rays. Then appropriate medications for pain can be prescribed. In the meantime, try to limit her activity. You can also use an ice-pack wrapped in a towel for 15 minutes at a time to help with pain and swelling. Unfortunately, there are no OTC human pain medications that would be safe to use in Lexi.
