Why is my 6-month-old puppy limping and holding his paw up for days?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Labrador Retriever | Male | unneutered | 6 months and 9 days old | 60 lbs

We went on an early morning run and Avenger started limping when we got home and holding his right paw up. I was worried he hurt it on our run but my husband says he’s been limping for a couple days. My question is, does anyone know what could be causing him to limp? I investigated his foot and I cant clearly see any wound but there is a knot where it looks like his dewclaw was removed.

I don't know how long you are going on your run but he is too young to be doing any type of distance running. His growth plates have not closed at this age so there could be an injury to one of those. He could have also be born with a congenital problem like elbow dysplasia or osteochondrosis dessicans (OCD). I suggest you get him to the vet for an exam and some x-rays. Don't take him running or on any long walks for now.
