My puppy is dry heaving but not throwing up. Should I be concerned?

Pet's info: Dog | Labrador Retriever | Male | 2 months and 30 days old | 30 lbs

My 14 week old lab hound puppy we adopted last week, had kennel cough which looks to be gone. The issue we are seeing today is that he threw up for the first time, and now has been have a few episodes where it appears like her is going to vomit but doesn't. I am not sure how concerned we should be and looking for guidance.

Poor Milo! It could be he is feeling a bit nauseous. I can give you a home remedy for him to see if that helps. Feed him a bland diet of boiled white meat chicken (no bones) and white rice in small amounts several times a day for a couple of days. Then slowly add back in his normal diet. If he refuses to eat the bland diet, he vomits the bland diet, develops diarrhea, stops drinking water, starts vomiting water, or becomes very lethargic, he will need to see a vet right away. My dog had soft stools this morning and had his tea went for a run with my son now has brought up his tea an basically emptied his stomach end in white bial with clear slime
It could be that Milo has a GI illness causing him to vomit and have soft stools. I can give you a home remedy to try to see if that helps before having to take him into the vet. Withhold food for 12-24 hours, then feed a bland diet of boiled white meat chicken (no bones) and white rice in small amounts several times a day for a couple of days. Then slowly add back in his normal diet. If the vomiting continues in the absence of food, he vomits the bland diet, the soft stools continues on the bland diet, he stops drinking water, starts vomiting water, or becomes very lethargic, he will need to see a vet right away.

It is hard to tell based on limited information how to help guide you with Milo. If Milo is only vomiting 1 time a day but is still eating, drinking, using the restroom, and acting like his normal self you could try a bland diet for a few days. The bland diet is easy to digest and might help stop the vomiting. You could try boiled chicken and white rice to start with. However, if this does not help or Milo does start to vomit more often, have diarrhea or start acting like he does not feel well I would recommend taking him to a vet for a more detailed exam.

Poor puppy! This vomiting could be caused by a severe GI illness, eating something rotten, a foreign body, pancreatitis, or even parvo if she isn't fully vaccinated. If she has been vomiting for less than 24 hours and not vomiting multiple times per hour, you can try a home remedy to see if that helps. Withhold food for 12-24 hours, then feed a bland diet of boiled white meat chicken (no bones) and white rice in small amounts several times a day for a couple of days. Then slowly add back in her normal diet. If the vomiting continues in the absence of food, she vomits the bland diet, develops diarrhea, stops drinking water, starts vomiting water, or becomes very lethargic, she will need to see a vet right away.

Poor Milo! If he is otherwise acting normal then you could withhold food for the day and see if the vomiting resolves. If so, then you could try a small amount of a bland diet, boiled chicken and white rice, this afternoon. Continue feeding the bland diet for a few days and the gradually transition back to his regular food. If the vomiting continues and/or he becomes lethargic then he needs to be examined by a vet for treatment. Your vet can take an x-ray, if needed, and then prescribe medications to help control the vomiting and make him feel better.
