My dog hates ear medicine. How to apply it without stress or bites?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | American Pit Bull Terrier | Male | 7 months and 7 days old | 38 lbs

Hi was wondering what was the best way to make your dog less nervous while applying medication for an ear infection. After 10 minutes of trying to hold her down and apply the medicine she bit me for the first time ever. Which I’m shocked and upset about .

It can be really hard to treat a dog when they don't want it. I would recommend calling your vet to see if there is a different type of medication that would work. There are some that can be placed in the ear at the vet clinic that can last through the whole treatment period. You could try a distraction like peanut butter smeared on a tile floor. https://vcahospitals.com/know-your-pet/applying-ear-drops-to-dogs
