Why is my Chow Chow puppy not eating, throwing up, and has red eyes?

Hi we have a new chow chow puppy, 12 weeks old, unvaccinated. Over the last 3 days he has reduced his food intake and also sometimes thrown up when eating, he now eats dry food one pellet at a time. He is not showing much discomfort but we are worried, his eyes are also watering a lot and when he wakes up they are red. The vets are saying they cannot vaccinate due to the corona virus for new puppies.

Poor Teddy sounds sick at the moment. It could be he has a stomach illness, and I can give you a home remedy for him to see if that helps. Feed him a bland diet of boiled white meat chicken (no bones) and white rice in small amounts several times a day for a couple of days. Then slowly add back in his normal diet. If he refuses to eat the bland diet, he vomits the bland diet, develops diarrhea, stops drinking water, starts vomiting water, or becomes very lethargic, he will need to see a vet right away. Thee red and watering eyes could be due to a condition called entropion, which is when the eyelids roll inward and the lashes brush the cornea causing irritation. This can be common in Chow Chows. I have a Chow, and she needed surgery to correct it. I'd have him seen by a vet for this issue as well. I hope this helps!

I am so sorry your puppy Ted has been ill. There are a couple of possibilities as to why he is so sick. 1) Parvovirus infection- if he is unvaccinated or not fully vaccinated and has been outside at all, then he could have picked up this extremely contagious and potentially deadly virus. It causes vomiting, lack of appetite, lethargy and loose stool +/- blood. He needs treatment right away by your local vet if you suspect he may have this. 2) Foreign body obstruction- if he likes to eat things in the home and seems to have a painful belly then take him in immediately to your local vet for x-rays of his belly and further care. 3) Other disease- severe anemia, bacterial infection, etc. If you cannot get him in right away then try to offer him small amounts of Pedialyte (non-flavored) and Pediasure or cans of baby food for nutritional support. However if he keep vomiting up everything he eats, then the vet can help by giving him anti-vomit medication, fluids to rehydrate him and further

Hello. I am sorry that Teddy is sick. You can try a bland diet to see if this helps Teddy. Boiled/boneless/skinless chicken breast and boiled rice in small frequent meals is recommended. However, if the vomiting continues, and Teddy doesn't want to eat, he could have other serious medical conditions that require veterinary care. Foreign bodies (eating a sock or toy) can be stuck in his guts and without surgery can be fatal. He could also have a serious gastritis, that may require medications to treat. I would recommend going to the vet if you can, or if he continues to vomit or not eat. Good luck with Teddy.

I would like to know what my dog has, he has droopy eyes (little redness/pinkness), lethargy, he wont eat, he wont move from 1 spot, barely active.
From these symptoms, there could be many things going on, but I am very concerned that Chico is very sick. A puppy sleeps more than an adult, but they should have a high activity level and eat well. I think Chico should get checked out by a vet. There are many things that could be causing his symptoms, including hypoglycemia, bacterial or viral infection (such as parvo virus), internal medical illness, intestinal parasites, etc. After examination, the vet should be able to give you an idea of what is going on, or what diagnostics should be run, such as intestinal parasite screening, bloodwork, parvo test, etc.

My puppy is constipated, has red eyes and has been vomiting during the night, what do i do??
Not sure if the red eyes may be related to the constipation and vomiting, but these signs could be compatible with an inflammation infection of the gastrointestinal system and surrounding organs (like pancreas and liver). A clinical examination at your local veterinarian is immediately essential to confirm these clinical suspicions and treat appropriately. Antibiotics and possibly further investigations (like abdominal imaging as ultrasound or radiographs) may be needed. Our dog threw up blood when we we're away on vacation and he hasn't been eating. His eyes are red and were worried but we don't have much money to pay for him to get checked. Is it serious or can we do anything to help him
As a general approach, in case the cause is dietary related, I would suggest to withhold food for the next 8-12 hours and then start feeding with a bland diet based on boiled chicken and rice in small portion every 6 hours for the following 48hours. Then gradually reintroduce the normal diet over 5 days. I would definitively recommend a veterinary check up if the signs persist or you notice diarrhoea, more vomiting, lethargy or inappetence. Several things are possible- He could be suffering from a corneal scratch/ulcer either due to an eye injury or an eyelid problem called entropion. This is where the eyelids roll in towards the eye causing corneal irritation, itching, and corneal damage. Another possibility would be a severe bacterial infection of the eyelids and surrounding skin or even a mite infection. Eyes are very special sense organs and eye problems can deteriorate very quickly. Your vet can gather a history, perform an exam and then advise diagnostic/treatment plans. Possible tests include corneal eye stain, measure pressure inside the eye, tear test, skin scrape (looking for mites), etc. Once a diagnosis is made, a sound treatment plan can be implemented. Thank you for submitting your question regarding Chico. He sounds quite ill for a young puppy. I recommend that he sees his veterinarian as it has been several days and he is not improving. I'm concerned that he is dehydrated at this point. He will likely require fecal testing, medication and possibly some fluids to rehydrate him. Hi, and thanks for your question. This is a quite generic but concerning presentation. Differentials are many, from gastrointestinal diseases (infection/inflammations often dietary related) to any disease that can spread systemically (causing lethargy for example) like infection, and anything that can cause pain/discomfort. The approach must be logic, starting from offering different kind of food. A check up is needed if inappetence lasts for more than 24hours. Hi there! Sorry to hear that Teddy is not feeling well. The clinical signs you describe are concerning when they occur in a puppy as they can be seen with serious gastrointestinal infections such as Parvovirus. Other possibilities include intestinal worms and dietary indiscretion, among other possibilities. Knowing that you have seen the worms makes this possibly the reason or a factor contributing to his symptoms. The sooner these conditions are treated the better the outcome tends to be. For this reason, I recommend that you have Teddy evaluated by your veterinarian to check for these possibilities and to start therapy based on findings. At the very least they can address dehydration if present and start him on anti-nausea medications. Good luck! Keeping my fingers crossed for your boy!

Poor Jax! It is very concerning that his eye is red, and it can be caused by things such as trauma to the eye, a corneal scratch, an eye infection, or abrasion to the eye. The eye is such a delicate and important structure that any problem with it should be considered an emergency. That's because leaving it untreated can lead to vision loss. I would take him into an ER vet now. The vomiting and not eating likely isn't related to the eye problem, but it's also always very concerning when a young puppy won't eat. That needs to be checked out asap as well. Best of luck.
