Why is my senior lab's persistent yellow soft stool not improving?

Pet's info: Dog | Labrador Retriever | Male | neutered | 70 lbs

My 14 year old lab has had mushy, yellowy soft stool for about 10 days. We tried a week of flagyl without improvement. Now going to start him on amoxicillin. He is not sick, he is his usual self and enjoys his meals. No vomiting. I have tried rice, pumpkin, chicken. Nothing makes any difference. The vet said we could drop him off for exam, due to covid, we can't accompany him and he goes nuts at the vet. He has cognitive dementia, cushings and I don't want to stress him. What could this be?

This diarrhea could be caused by something serious like liver disease, kidney disease, or even cancer in a dog Mitch's age. He does need to see a vet for this, especially nothing you are doing is helping. It's worth the visit, I'd take him into one today.

If Mitch has been on Anipryl for a while, I wouldn't expect the diarrhea to be related. If it was started recently, then you may want to back down for a bit and see if the diarrhea resolves. You can add probiotics and feed a bland diet of cooked white rice and boiled chicken breast for a few days to rest the GI tract.

The color of the stool is usually associated with something they are eating, but the yellow/orange color can sometimes be associated with liver disease. Since Marley does not seem to be responding to previous medical treatments, I would recommend that you discuss additional diagnostics with your vet. I would start with an intestinal parasite screening, and if that is negative, move on to bloodwork and/or a GI panel (specialized bloodwork). Occasionally all labs can be normal and surgical or endoscopic intestinal biopsies are needed.

I would wonder if Shadow is developing some sort of food allergy or perhaps inflammatory bowel disease. I would recommend to talk to Shadow's doctor about a food trial for Shadow. This would be the best way to know if the diarrhea is related to food. I would also recommend to supplement him with probiotics more frequently as this helps to maintain a good GI flora. The doctor may also want to check blood values and maybe even an x-ray to rule out other causes of chronic diarrhea.

My 10 yr old chi has had an anal fissure and anal fland problems and now hes got mustard looking diarreah. I havent changed his diet but i rhink he might have eaten my other chi puppies food which is kibbles n bits and he eats iams wet food. Im scare
I would recommend that you have Chico examined by a vet. Anal fissures and anal gland issues often need appropriate antibiotics and anti-inglammatories to get under control. Yellow diarrhea could be caused by the sudden change in diet. Kibbles n Bits is very high in fat, which could cause yellow loose stools. It could also be caused by intestinal parasites or an infection. You can try a bland diet (boiled chicken breast, cook white rice, egg whites) and consider Pepto Bishop ( http://www.veterinarypartner.com/Content.plx?P=A&S=0&C=0&A=1733 ), but if it lasts longer than 24 hours, Chico definitely needs this checked out by a vet.

Hello my 13 year old dog has yellow diarrhoea,should I take her to the vets?
If Tasha just started having diarrhea, I can give you a home remedy to try before having to take her into the vet. This diarrhea could be caused by GI illness, eating something rotten, a foreign body, or even something more serious like cancer in a senior dog. Withhold food for 12-24 hours, then feed a bland diet of boiled white meat chicken (no bones) and white rice in small amounts several times a day for a couple of days. Then slowly add back in her normal diet. If the diarrhea continues on the bland diet, she starts vomiting food, stops drinking water, starts vomiting water, or becomes very lethargic, she will need to see a vet right away.

At his age Diarrhea can be a sign of a serious condition rather than a simple gastrointestinal upset, i would strongly advice taking him to the vet for a full checkup including blood test to get a full health assessment.

Hello, sorry to hear about Hope. She may require medications to control her diarrhea since the bland diet is not doing much to improve her stools. Medications may include dewormers, antibiotics, and probiotics in conjunction with continuing the bland diet. If the diarrhea does not improve even with those, then Hope may need further diagnostics to rule out a metabolic disease as the primary cause of the diarrhea. I would say that if Hope continues to have the same amount of diarrhea tomorrow, then she should be evaluated by her veterinarian immediately. In the meantime, continue giving her the bland diet only and make sure she has access to plenty of water at all times. Hope this helps.

The yellow color is not too concerning and the stool still appears rather firm, so I wouldn't be too worried. The signs of straining and mucous tell me that something is bothering her colon. This could be something she ate, an infection, or other disease. It doesn't appear to be serious right now, but it's always possible that it could be the start of something serious. If Jenny has any of the following, then she should see a vet: 1) Blood in diarrhea 2) Very watery diarrhea 3) Starts acting very depressed 4) Stops eating or drinking for longer than 24 hours. You can possibly help by feeding bland food (boneless chicken and rice is good). Feed small portions (1 cup or less) three times a day. You can also add probiotics to the food (can get this at the pet store), which has demonstrated some efficacy for improving diarrhea. Ensure fresh, clean water is always available. If a week goes by and the stool is still abnormal, then it would be best to take Jenny into the vet f

However, if this does not resolve or progresses to watery diarrhea, a veterinary evaluation should be pursued. Diarrhea can be observed with conditions such as colitis, gastroenteritis, dietary indiscretion, intestinal parasites, among many other possibilities. I recommend that you have Pepper evaluated by your veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. My senior dog keeps having spells where she has diarrhea. We have not switched her food and she is on a sensitive system diet.
Diarrhea can be a symptom of many illnesses, so if your dog has had chronic diarrhea and a diet change hasn't helped (such as being on a sensitive diet like you stated), then it is a good idea to schedule an appointment with your local vet. Your vet can check for problems such as parasites or illnesses that may be causing digestive upset. Your vet may also recommend a senior blood panel to help check for any senior-related illnesses that may be causing the symptoms you see. Be sure to collect a sample of your dog's stool if you can before your appointment. In the meantime, offering something such as some plain yogurt, or even boiled chicken and rice can help soothe a minorly upset stomach, however an appointment is needed to address the underlying cause of diarrhea.
