Dog licking red, wet paw after bandage/stitches. Should I see a vet?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Medium (23 - 60lb) | Male | neutered | 7 years and 5 months old | 53.5 lbs

Two weeks ago my dog had stitches on the top of his paw. The entire front leg was wrapped in a bandage for about 10 days. After the bandage and stitches were removed he started licking the top of his paw (NOT where the stitches were). There was a piece of matted hair that we cut off thinking that was why. Almost a week later he tries to lick off and on and when he does the top of the paw looks red and wet. We have used an anti microbial spray. Should we make an appt or continue to stop him

Thank you for submitting your question regarding Timmy. I recommend that he does see his veterinarian again. He may have gotten the skin infected from all his licking. This may be why he keeps going back to it. In the meantime, keep an E-collar on him to prevent access to the paw and any further self trauma. I hope this information helps!
