Why is my dog shaking and rubbing after K9 Advantix II flea treatment?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Yorkshire Terrier | Male | unneutered | 2 years and 6 months old | 11 lbs

I gave my 11.8 lb Yorkie (2 years old) ONE application of the K9 Advantix ll for medium dogs (11-20lbs). I applied it yesterday around 6p. It says not to get it on his fur, but that’s impossible because his hair is cut short. This morning, he keeps shaking as if he’s trying to get something off him, and rubbing against the floor and the side of my bed. Is it fleas? Should i administer the second application? Or is this indication that something is wrong with how i applied it?

It's possible that the product is burning or that he can smell/feel the product on his skin. I don't recommend to re-apply the product and I suspect the application is not the problem. You may try using a hair brush and brushing the area of application. Do check the skin to make sure it's not red/scabbig. This will generally stop within 24 hours. Moving forward, I recommend to speak with your vet about an oral flea product like Simparica. I hope this helps.
