My cat has hairballs stuck in her fur. How can I safely remove them?

How do you get hair balls out of a cats fur. We’ve cut them out a few times but they are very close to her skin and were afraid of cutting her. What’s a safe way to remove them

Yes, you are correct, you could accidentally cut Sophia. I've done this myself! My cat needed stitches. I felt awful. You can take her into a groomer to have them shaved out, that's the safest thing to do. You can also buy shaving razor for pets from a pet store to do it yourself. I hope this helps!

Hi! My cat, Estelle is coated in burrs. I have been trying to remove them one by one, but they are so entangled in the fur, that is literally impossible. Is it alright if I trim her down?
We do routinely shave cats that have matted or soiled fur. How easy this will be will depend on your cat's personality, so you may need to enlist the help of a professional groomer! They have special groomer clippers to shave the fur to different lengths so hopefully they can keep some of her hair, or they may be able to remove the burrs. It also might be helpful getting a detangler or creme rinse made for pets and spraying it on the areas and then trying to comb over the areas with a fine comb, as it may loosen the burrs from the fur and help you avoid having to shave her! I wouldn't recommend using scissors to trim her down as it is very easy to accidentally cut a cat's thin skin. You will also want to keep her indoors if it is cold in your area and her coat is still short.

My older cat appears to have altogether stopped grooming herself. Is there anything I can do to help decrease the amount of clumpy, matted hair she has? I'm fearful to cut or shave any matted hair since I don't want to cut her skin.
Definitely don't cut! You are very likely to cut the skin if you use scissors. You can use shaving clippers or take Calico to a groomer. Once the mats are gone, you will need to brush her daily to remove loose hairs to prevent the mats from coming back. I would also recommend having Calico evaluated by her vet to see if she has arthritis preventing her from being able to groom. Medications may make her more comfortable.

My cat has bunched clumps of fur that are rock hard. Sometimes they end up tearing off and then become bald spots. Should I go to see a vet to have them remove the matting or can I do this myself at home. I'm worried about harming her.

There is nothing OTC that you can safely give that will effectively calm her down enough for grooming. You may need to have her lightly sedated by your veterinarian so she can be safely shaved or clipped. Using scissors at home can lead to a laceration if you aren't careful. An exam is also a good idea to determine why Xena is not grooming herself.

We have a 10 yr old BIG cat (23 lbs) who is in need of major grooming. He has thick clumps all over his back. Because of his size, he can't reach them. It's a big job, but the cat is very gentle. Is this a possibility for one of your cat groomers?
Removing those clumps will be stressful for your kitty. The best would be to make an appointment with your vet for a shave under sedation. There could be sores underneath the mats which should be taken care of as well. Once the mats are gone I suggest you regularly brush and later comb Star to help with his grooming and clumps and mats will not reoccur.

Oren has some fur mats and we are struggling to brush them out. We’re very gentle and have tried treats too but now as soon as we get near the mats he runs away, even if we’re barely touching the mats. He loves being brushed on his head and back but
I'm sorry that you are dealing with mats with Oren. Unfortunately, once a mat has formed, it is not possible to gently brush it out. It will be painful and require ripping the hair out (which is why Oren is running away from you). So, once a mat has formed, the entire mat needs to be removed. I do not recommend doing that with scissors because there is a high likelihood that Oren might move and get his skin cut. The safest way to remove mats is with electric clippers, but most cats hate the sound of them. I wish I had a better option for you, but a groomer appointment to remove the mats quickly might be the best thing for Oren, so he does not associate you with anything scary. Good luck! I noticed my cat has a few spots where her hair is matted on her back. I thought maybe she got into something so I just bathed her and put some conditioner on those spots, but it didn't do anything and she get upset when I try to pull the hair apart
Matts can be very painful to a cat, and if Buttons gets upset when you try to pull the hair apart or comb it, I would not do that anymore. Likely these matts will need to be shaved out. You can take her into the groomer to get that done, or if you have pet clippers, you can do it yourself at home. I do recommend having a groomer do it, however, as cats sometimes don't like being shaved and a groomer would have more experience on how to do it without stressing her out. Hi, thanks for using Boop by Petco! Poor Tulip! The mats are painful, cause itching and could cause skin issues. If she will allow you to shave them (do not use scissors) then great. Other options are traveling groomers that come to your house or scheduling a sedated shave down with your vet. Maybe they can provide an oral sedative before hand so you can catch her and make the car ride less awful. I hope this helps and happy holidays.

Yes, it would be safe to trim Cherry Blossom's fur around her feet, but I would use clippers instead of scissors so you don't accidentally cut her feet. If you don't have clippers and are afraid you may cut her feet with the scissors, you can make an appointment with a groomer to have her feet trimmed. Best of luck.
