My dog threw up and has a gurgling stomach. Should I withhold food?

My dog threw up three times today. She threw up some dog food along with grass. Her stomach is making some gurgling noises. Should I withhold food?

You could try withholding food for about 6-8 hours as long as Julie is otherwise healthy and doesn't have any other symptoms. You could then try offering a a small amount of a bland diet like a mixture of 25% plain, boiled boneless chicken breast and 75% plain cooked white rice (as long as Julie doesn't have any food sensitivities). If she continues to vomit you should contact your vet.

    Bailey could have eaten something that upset her stomach, causing the gurgling and bloating. Given that she is eating, pooping, and is still energetic, I wouldn't be too concerned at this point in time. You can try withholding food for 12-24 hours, then feed a bland diet of boiled white meat chicken (no bones) and white rice in small amounts several times a day for a couple of days to see if that helps her stomach. If it does, slowly add back in her normal diet.

You could feed boiled chicken breast and cooked white rice and see if she feels better within 24 hours. If she doesn't want to eat that or she continues vomiting she should probably get checked out by a vet since she is an older girl. If she isn't normally bothered by thunderstorms, then it is unlikely that they would cause her to lose her appetite this morning.

My dog has vomited 5 times overnight.
If she is otherwise acting normal, then you could withhold food (make sure she has water) for 6-8 hours and see if the vomiting resolves. If it resolves, feed her a small amount of a bland diet (boiled chicken and white rice) this afternoon. If the vomiting continues and/or she is acting lethargic then she should be examined and treated by a vet as soon as possible. The vet can run blood-work and take x-rays, if needed, to help determine the cause. She may need an injection of an anti-vomiting medication to help control the vomiting.

Then slowly add back in his normal diet. If the vomiting continues in the absence of food, he vomits the bland diet, has diarrhea on the bland diet, stops drinking water, starts vomiting water, or becomes very lethargic, he will need to see a vet right away. I'm sorry to hear that Coopef has not been feeling well. If you have not heard any audible sounds of vomiting or seen retching with abdominal effort, there is a chance that he is regurgitating. While this distinction may seems small, causes of vomiting (gastroenteritis, viruses, foreign bodies, pancreatitis, etc.) and regurgitation (megaesophagus, esophagitis, neurologic conditions, immune-mediated disease, etc.) differ greatly. Since he is still eating and acting normally, you can try withholding food for 12-24 hours, then introduce small frequent amounts of a bland diet of boiled white meat chicken and white rice (1 cup for every 10 pounds of body weight) for several days. However, if he continues vomiting or regurgitating, stops eating or becomes lethargic, you may need to take him to a different vet for evaluation before the 17th if your regular vet is unable to see him. Oh no, poor Tartine! It is concerning she is vomiting large amount of kibbles, but that's great there is no sign of bloat. Keep monitoring her closely for signs of bloat, and I can give you a home remedy for the vomiting to see if that helps. Withhold food for 12-24 hours, then feed a bland diet of boiled white meat chicken (no bones) and white rice in small amounts several times a day for a couple of days. Then slowly add back in her normal diet. If the vomiting continues in the absence of food, she vomits the bland diet, develops diarrhea, stops drinking water, starts vomiting water, or becomes very lethargic, she will need to see a vet right away. If she is behaving normally otherwise, try fasting her for 12-24 hours. Allow small amounts of water or unflavored PediaLyte. Resume feeding a bland diet in small, frequent amounts until symptoms resolve. Monitor for lethargy, vomiting, diarrhea, loss of appetite or abdominal pain. These are symptoms that should be addressed by your veterinarian.

Consider a recheck with your veterinarian. An abdominal x-ray may diagnose a foreign body or even an obstruction. Since Rocco isn't eating, supportive care may be indicated to prevent dehydration. You can try feeding a bland diet in small, frequent amounts. Begin with 1 tablespoon of food and gradually increase the amount if he eats and holds it down. A bland diet can be plain white rice mixed with one of the following: cottage cheese, cooked/drained ground turkey, cooked/drained ground beef or boiled boneless/skinless chicken breasts. Mix rice and the protein source in a 1:1 ratio.
