My rat has red fur stains and yellow grease. Is vet care needed?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

My rat Scamper always get red stains in his fur, I was told it's an allergy called porphyrin, and he gets buck grease(yellow grease on his fur) and I bathed him and it was gone, should I seek vet care or just clean it off? It doesn't seem to irritate him. Any remedies or anything?

It is normal porphyrin staining. It is not a problem. Sometimes you can bathe them and it will resolve and sometimes not. It is not dangerous. There are no remedies to make it stop unfortunately. Good question!
