My cat's paw pads are bleeding. Could carpet be causing rug burns?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | American Longhair | Male | neutered | 5 lbs

Can a cat who is used to a hard floor that now lives mainly on carpet develop rug burns that cause his carpal pads to bleed?

Thank you for using PetCoach. Unless there is some sort of chemical in the the carpet that Walter is allergic to or causing contact irritation I would not expect carpet to be the cause of bleeding pads. When possible, I recommend taking him to a veterinarian to find out what may be going on. This is one condition that may be possible: https://veterinarypartner.vin.com/default.aspx?pid=19239&id=4952090
