My cat's paw pads are bleeding. Could carpet be causing rug burns?

Can a cat who is used to a hard floor that now lives mainly on carpet develop rug burns that cause his carpal pads to bleed? Pet's info: Cat | American Longhair | Male | neutered | 5 lbs

Unless there is some sort of chemical in the the carpet that Walter is allergic to or causing contact irritation I would not expect carpet to be the cause of bleeding pads. When possible, I recommend taking him to a veterinarian to find out what may be going on.
