Why do my dog's anal gland infections keep coming back with blood?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Large (61lb +) | Female | spayed | 2 years and 9 months old | 83 lbs

My dog has started having issues of blood coming from her anal sacs. It started about 6 months ago, and everyone a vet puts her on an antibiotic, it goes away, then comes back. The “infection” also jumps from one sac to another. The first time it was the left sac, the second time the right, and the third time the right again.

You may speak with your veterinarian about a diet trial with a hydrolyzed protein diet for 12 weeks. This will tell you if an allergy is present. If you can;t control it with food, you may look into surgery to remove the glands. I hope this helps.
