My cat's eye is bulging and bleeding. What if I can't afford a vet?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

My cat is currently losing his right eye. He's had an eye infection for the longest time now which wouldnt go away no matter what I tried but about a week ago the pressure behind it got so bad it started bulging and bleeding. I tried to clean away the puss and blood but to no avail. He isn't in any pain but today it is again bleeding, had puss on it and is bulging. My family doesn't have the money to take him to a vet and we don't want to put him down because he is not in pain. What do we do?

I can guarantee this is excruciating painful to him, and this is now a medical emergency. Leaving this untreated would be very cruel to him, you have to take him into a vet now. If paying for a vet is an issue, you can see if your vet accepts payment plans, if there is a low cost clinic in your area, or you can apply for Care Credit online. There is also an organization called Red Rover that give grants for treatment of sick animals, and you can see if you qualify for one of their grants. Best Friends also has a list of resources that offer financial assistance on their website. I'd also see if you can borrow money from family and friends. http://www.humanesociety.org/animals/resources/tips/trouble_affording_pet.html?credit=web_id91754962 https://www.redrover.org https://www.carecredit.com http://bestfriends.org/resources/financial-aid-pets http://lessonsfromaparalyzeddog.com/when-pet-owners-cant-afford-veterinary-bills/ http://www.dogheirs.com/resources-affordable-veterinary-care/

Poor Olaf has to see a vet immediately, this is a medical emergency. Any problem with the eye is an emergency because leaving it untreated can lead to vision loss. Unfortunately, I'm all too familiar with this. My cat had an ulcer in his eye that I was treating, and it ending up being so deep that his eyeball essentially ruptured and he had to have his eye taken out. Olaf needs to see a vet now to have his eye treated to avoiding him losing sight in the eye and possibly his eye. I would see if you can borrow money from family and friends, and I can give you some resources that may help you afford a vet. God's Creatures Ministry helps pay for veterinarian bills for those who need help.
The Onyx & Breezy Foundation has many programs including helping people with medical bills. They are a good resource for information.
Brown Dog Foundation provides funding to families with a sick pet that would likely respond to treatment, but due to circumstances, there is not enough money immediately available to pay. IMOM is dedicated to insure that no companion animal has to be euthanized simply because their caretaker is financially challenged. I hope one of these resources helps you, please take Olaf into a vet now.
