My cat's ingrown nail wound has clear liquid. What should I do?

My cat has a open wound from an ingrown nail, the nail has been removed but there seems to be a clear liquid coming from the wound.

I would gently clean the wound with warm water and antiseptic soap. To keep Speedy from licking at it, you can put an Ecollar on her. You can get one at a pet store or make one at home. Keep the wound clean and dry, and monitor it for signs of infection. If you see redness, swelling, warmth to the touch, or pus, then it is infected and she will need to see the vet for antibiotics to treat it.

You can wash it with mild soapy water (dawn dish soap works well) if she'll let you, and then monitor the nail bed for redness, swelling, or discharge that would indicate infection. If she won't let you wash it, she will likely clean it herself. Mild nail bed injuries often resolve just fine on their own, but do watch for evidence of infection which would require a trip to the vet. Hope this helps.

As long as it is not painful , swollen and/or does not have a purulent discharge (pus), there is no need to put an antibiotic on the wound. Of the paw swells or the toe, or if he starts to limp or bother the wound , you should take Stylo to a vet for an exam. Do not soak the paw, as this may damage the new cells that grow to heal the wound.

My kitten has a infected nail and I was wondering what I could do or give her to help her at home. I really don't have the money to take her to the vet at the moment.
This presentation could be due to a trauma or localized spot of skin infection (likely to be caused by bacteria). A check up, appropriate disinfection and possibly antibiotics are needed to solve the problem, but disinfection can be started at home with very diluted hibiscrub or betadine or salted water baths (twice daily for 4-5 days). Buster collar may be useful as well to avoid any licking.

Ouch! It looks like the nail might have gotten caught and torn out, causing the wound you are seeing. As cat wounds can become easily infected, especially if they lick at it, it is a good idea to have a vet take a look at it and prescribe antibiotics to help it heal. They can also make sure the nail bed and any surrounding tissue is OK as well. Until you can get to your vet, keeping it clean and dry and using an Elizabethan (cone) collar to keep Kiara from licking it is best.

Anything you apply will likely be licked off and ingested. This could further complicate his condition. If a vet visit is not possible now, you can try soaking the paw in a diluted Betadine or chlorhexidine (Hibiclens) solution twice daily. Dry it thoroughly afterwards. An e-collar (cone) is your best bet at preventing licking which could delay healing. If this doesn't work, Thor will need to be seen by your veterinarian. He may need antibiotics to resolve any infection and pain medication to manage discomfort. Do not medicate him at home without the advice of your veterinarian.

It's hard to tell from the pictures exactly where the wound is and if it involves the claw itself. I would soak her paw in warm water (you can use a little epsom salts if you have it) to loosen the scab, then you can gently clean it with a warm wet washcloth. If you find that there is bleeding, then apply gently pressure for 15 minutes. Don't apply any topical medications as Luna will just lick them off. If the bleeding continues, or of the paw swells, or if there is a creamy or foul discharge, then she may need to go to the vet for examination and antibiotics.

Generally these heal uneventfully and a new nail will grow in its place over time. Keep the arrea clean with cooled boiled water for 2-3days and monitor for any heat, swelling or discharge indicating the need for a vet visit
