My cat died suddenly. Is his littermate at risk for cardiomyopathy?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Mixed Breed | Male | neutered | 6 years and 10 months old | 17 lbs

I lost my cat Rigby yesterday suddenly to what my vet thinks is cardiomyothapy. I am devastated & terrified that his litter mate, Chicken will die too. rigby was more active, bigger and longer than chicken, chicken is overweight & wheezes sometimes while breathing. Both ested negative for feline leukemia as kittens. Both indoor only cats. What are the chances that Chicken has cardiomyothapy too, & what can I do? Rigby is in the first picture, chicken is in the second. Thank you for your help

First off, I'm sorry very sorry you lost Rigby! Please accept my condolences for your loss. I don't think the chances are high Chicken has cardiomyopathy as well. You can have his heart checked out by a vet to make sure everything is ok. Again, I'm sorry for your loss.
