My dog pees often and has a dry cough. Should I be worried?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Medium (23 - 60lb) | Male | unneutered | 1 year old | 55 lbs

I've noticed recently that my pupp will start peeing, will stop, walk off and return about a minute later for a second time, and then will repeat for a third. Ive also noticed that he has been dry hacking at least twice a month for the last 4 months, but he also doesnt seem to drink much. His litter brother was unfortunately recently put down after finding advanced cancer. Does he just have some sort of adhd and a dry throat or should I be concerned?

A hacking cough can be a sign of allergies or a collapsing trachea, and it would be a good idea to mention it to your vet during your next visit. As long as it continues to happen infrequently and Lucky is not having difficulty breathing I probably wouldn’t make an appointment now. If this urination habit is new however I’d worry that it might be a sign of a urinary issue. If it seems like he is continuing to urinate small amounts frequently or if you see him attempting to urinate without passing anything you should make an appointment to see your vet.
