Why does my rescue cat still have loose stools after treatment?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Domestic Shorthair | Male | neutered | 1 year and 8 months old

I got my cat in February, he is a two year old rescue. When he came to me he had worms and fleas which I treated him for. But for the past month he’s had loose stools. My vet prescribed antibiotics and special food for him. After a week his stools where still loose, she has given him another week of antibiotics which are nearly complete and half a worming tablet. I’m concerned worms are not the problem, but they are doing nothing further due to Coronavirus, unless it’s an emergency.

There can be lots of causes for diarrhea or loose stools in a cat, including food intolerance or allergies, intestinal parasites, inflammatory bowel disease, intestinal lymphoma, among other things. If Vinnie is eating well and has a good activity level, I think it is ok to wait until things outside start to clear up. Vinnie may need to go on a hypoallergenic diet, try other prescription medications, have an abdominal ultrasound, or special blood work to determine what is going on.
