My cat has bloody diarrhea. Should I take him back to the vet?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Mixed Breed | Male | neutered

My cat has had diarrhea for the past few days. He has prokolin each day as recommended by the vet and a bland diet. His energy levels are the same and he is eating but his stools are very runny and have now got quite a bit of blood in them

It sounds like Ronnie's intestines may be quite irritated from the diarrhea leading to the blood. I'm concerned that he does now have blood in his poop, so I would take him back into a vet today to get checked out.

There is some mucous and some blood in that sample. Due to the blood starting I would make an appointment to have him seen. You can find a feline probiotic at any pet store and start him in that to help until he gets seem. This may be from eating something or picking up an infection

This blood indicates that there is some inflammation and bleeding in the rectum. Generally, this is not as concerning as bleeding in the small intestine and I would not consider this an emergency. It is actually not too uncommon to see bleeding with some cases of diarrhea and if Louie is otherwise OK, then you're OK to wait till your vet appointment. I would be more suspicious of parasitism or an infection causing this diarrhea, but a food intolerance is possible. Either way, it's good to feed a bland or sensitive stomach diet at this time. Also, make sure he has plenty of water. Bring a stool sample in to your vet appointment, so they can test it for some common causes. I hope that helps and Louie feels better soon.
