Is my betta fish sick? It won't eat, changes color, and spits food.

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Fish | Betta | Female | unspayed | 0.5 lbs

My betta fish is not eating and we are noticing a change in he color. We feed her Aqueon Betta Food and she ate it for her first month but now she will put the food and either chew it up and spit out the food, or she will spit it out whole. We know that it takes two weeks for bettas to stave to death but we don’t know what is wrong. we removed the rocks from the bottom of the tank so she could eat the food off the floor of the tank if she got hungry. Below i’ll attach a before and after photo.

That looks like a very small tank for sweet Cherry. Bettas really do best in a larger space, I would consider 2.5 gallons the absolute minimum. The larger the tank, the safer the water conditions will be. They also need a filter and water heater. They are tropical fish and really need the water to be 78-80*F. Hopefully this is just a husbandry issue rather than a disease. Check out this article for more advice: https://vetmed.illinois.edu/pet_column/betta-fish/
