Why is my dog chewing her itchy feet? Is it allergies or weather?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Yorkshire Terrier | Female | unspayed | 3 years and 5 months old | 12 lbs

My dog recently started nibbling on the bottom of her feet like they are itchy. Could it be because of the weather change or allergies.

Allergies are the most common cause of itchy feet in dogs. Sometimes dog will chew to the point that they develop a skin infection, so if Charlie has redness or discharge between the toes or if she is chewing constantly you may want to have your vet take a look. I also recommend wiping feet every time Charlie comes inside from outdoors since some allergens like pollens can be absorbed through the feet.

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! I'm sorry to hear little girl is having itching issues. Itching the paws like you are describing can be due to a variety of causes, including a skin infection, skin parasites (such as mites) or allergies, among others. I would recommend having her evaluated by her regular veterinarian to try and determine what may be causing her to itch, and following a treatment plan accordingly. Good luck!
