My cat has a URI. Is a bloody nose or breathing difficulty normal?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Mixed Breed | Female | spayed

My cat has an upper respiratory infection and is on day 8 of antibiotics. She is improving but has a bloody nose now (it’s been dry but I had a humidifier on) and can not lay down sometimes although I see her try. Are these normal symptoms of a URI?

Some irritation in the nose is possible, but there shouldn't be frank blood coming from the nose. Not laying down could indicate that there is also issues in the lungs, as in pneumonia. In pets with decreased lung capacity, laying down makes it much harder to breathe. I would recommend taking Wendy back to the vet for re-evaluation. It is possible to develop secondary pneumonia from a URI.
