Can trimming my double-coated dog's fur help him stay cool outside?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Large (61lb +) | Male | unneutered | 5 years and 2 months old

I have a golden retriever and German shepherd mix. He looks like a black golden retriever and has a thick black coat. He has a very furry chest, but we live in a hot country and he lives outside. I have read that trimming is not a good option for Golden retrievers; would you say that trimming his fur at all or just his chest fur would help in keeping him cool?

Actually, double coated breeds have natural mechanisms for keeping warm and cool. I would not recommend clipping him as this interferes with their natural temperature management. His best bet would be to be provided a cool area to rest and lots of access to water. If it's too hot, make accomodations for him where you can control the temperature or bring him into the garage.
