Applied Sentry flea treatment to my cat's open wound. Is it safe?

Pet's info: Cat | Domestic Shorthair | Female | spayed | 7 years and 10 months old | 12 lbs

My cat has fleas so I went to the pet store and bought Sentry topical flea and tick medicine for her then came home and applied it as directed. I didn't notice until after I applied it that she has a small open wound so I went online to find out if it's dangerous to apply this medicine on open wounds. I discovered that there are a lot of bad reviews about Sentry making cats sick and now I am worried about her. What should I do?

Sentry is actually a pretty good product, it's one that I recommend, and I would not worry about reviews online. That is anecdotal evidence not scientific evidence. She should be ok. Yes, Sentry products are not recommended. If you need flea prevention you should get it from your vet. My recommendation would be to try and wash off that medication ASAP. Use Dawn dishsoap to wash the cats since it will cut through the oils in the skin. Be sure to rinse them thoroughly and dry them with towels (not hair dryers). If they start showing any other symptoms, especially neurologic symptoms, they need to get to a vet as an emergency. Hope this helps. Sorry this happened. Best wishes.

Hello, thank you for using Boop by Petco. He is probably having a reaction to the Sentry. This is not the best product and I strongly recommend you stay away from using it. This product is known to have a high rate of reactions. If you are looking for an over the counter product I would use [Advantage II](https://www.petco.com/shop/en/petcostore/product/advantage-ii-once-a-month-cat-and-kitten-topical-flea-treatment-over-9-lbs) but honestly, when a cat has other underlying health issues it is best to consult with your vet as to what the best product would be to use for him. At this point in time, the best thing to do is to bathe him in Dawn dish soap in an attempt to remove any residue from the Sentry and then wait two weeks before applying a different product. Over the counter Hartz and Sentry products do not work. I suggest you get prescription strength flea medications. You can easily get these medications from one of our VETCO clinics inside Petco stores. It is first come, first serve and there is no exam fee so just the cost of the products. The vet there can advise you when you can give the new product based on when you applied the other product. Considering many millions of pets are being treated with this preventative, but only few have serious side effects, you should not worry. Thank you for submitting your question regarding Snoops. It should be fine to apply his Frontline Plus as normal. His wounds appear to be healing well from your pictures. As long as he is feeling well, eating/drinking and does not have a fever, he can have his Frontline Plus. I hope this information helps!

Hi, thanks for using Boop by Petco! Yes, but apply the topical medication to a healthy area of skin. Do not apply it to a scratch or open sore. Luey should probably be seen by a vet and given a steroid injection and an antibiotic if his skin is that bad. It will provide him with relief and help the wounds heal more quickly! I place Sentry Plus flea medication on my cats last Wednesday. The medicine does not seem to be working. Can I safely use Frontline now or do I need to wait one month to apply it?
Since both Sentry and Frontline use the same active ingredient (fipronil) it is unlikely that you will see better protection switching to the Frontline. You will need to choose a product with a different ingredient, like Advantage or Revolution or a Seresto collar. If you choose to use another topical, I would recommend bathing your kitty today to remove any remnants of the Sentry, and wait 3 days to apply the next topical. It is important to wait after bathing so that the natural body oils have time to coat the skin to ensure adequate absorption. You do not need to wait or bathe to use a Seresto collar.

That wound on his foot looks swollen which is concerning for a deeper infection or a wound to the bone structures in the leg. I recommend to get this examined since a physical exam is the first step in determining the extent of the injury. As for the fleas, top products for cats are topicals such as Revolution and Cheristan. There is also an oral product called Comfortis that both dogs and cats can take. You will need to switch all the pets over to a good flea product. Make sure to discuss these products with your veterinarian first. These products are generally safe for all pets but there are some conditions which are contraindicated for the oral products. Cleaning up and treating the house and yard will also help but it will not clear all the fleas. The main control is making sure the pets are on good products. This is what will ultimately stop the infestation. Also remember every female fleas lays about 50 eggs a day and it could take up to 6 months before the eggs hatch. Therefor

Yes, you can give Aries Capstar in addition to the topical Sentry medication. Be sure to continue applying topical flea prevention monthly in order to break the flea lifecycle. When he is due for the next dose of medication, I would recommend using a higher quality (both safer and more effective) flea preventative, such as Advantage, Revolution, or Bravecto. If you have any other dogs or cats in the house, be sure to treat all pets with good quality flea prevention. I hope this helps and that all goes well!

Generally flea products should not be reapplied within 2-4weeks. Many flea products (including sentry) only kill adult fleas after they bite your pet so there can be a timeframe in between where you may see the adult flea before it becomed unwell and dies. I strongly recommend you use an insecticidal household spray to kill any eggs and larvae in the house/bedding areas in such a severe infestation (5% of the fkea population is adult at any one stage; 95% are eggs and developing larvae). Seresto could then be applied after 14days
