My dog's nail is broken and bleeding. What should I do for the injury?

my dogs nail broke when playing, it’s bleeding and it looks like it’s about to fall off. i haven’t done anything but rinse it with water and wrap it with a sock. what should i do?

That's a good first step! Keep it covered tonight, and put a cone on Benji to keep him from licking his paw. You can make one at home. Then have him seen by a vet in the morning to get this treated. Do not feed him in the morning as he will likely have to be sedated to get the nail removed without pain. The vet can also prescribe pain relief and antibiotics. Poor Ruby. These can be really painful to dogs. This will have to be cut off, but I would not do it yourself because of the pain. Wrap a bandage around her paw to protect and cover it, then have her seen by a vet in the morning to have it treated. Cover the whole paw with the bandage. She may need to be sedated to have it removed, so don't feed her in the morning. I hope this helps!

My Yorkie just broke a nail and it’s hanging. She isn’t limping and is running around but it’s bleeding. Her vet is closed and I won’t be able to take her till the morning. What should I do?
If you have a small baby sock you can tape it on (just not tightly). The keep her confined to a small area so she isn’t running around and making it bleed. Hopefully this will hold you until tomorrow morning. However if she seems really painful or the bleeding doesn’t stop then I would encourage you to have her evaluated by a veterinarian as soon as possible. It sounds like poor Leica has broken a toenail! Those can be very painful, but if she is acting otherwise normal, it may not be bothering her much. Nails can bleed a lot, so dip the nail in styptic powder, use a styptic pencil, or cornstarch. These should help stop the bleeding. I would not try to remove the nail yourself, that may be very painful to her. Bandage it up to keep the area clean and dry, and to prevent infection from entering the nail. You may need to put an Ecollar on her to keep her from licking at it. You can get one at a pet store or make one at home (I will put a link below on how to do it). Have her seen by a vet on Monday to have the nail removed if needed. I wouldn't feed her after 8pm or in the morning of the appointment in case the vet needs to sedate her to remove the nail. My dog was outside and came back in with a very broken nail. It looks too high up to cut, but is not bleeding currently. What should I do for this poor guy?
If it's not bleeding it may not have injured the quick but I can't tell from the photo. The broken part of the nail needs to be removed and of the break is behind the quick, Loki needs to be sedated and clip behind the break (which is painful so they get sedated). Since you are unable to tell how severe the break is, I recommend to have Loki examined first thing tomorrow morning. Restrict the activity today and do not allow him to climb up and down on the couch. He should only be outside on a leash. Tomorrow the vet will access how significant the break is and will remove the broken part of the nail. I hope this helps.

Hello. This is such a common injury in dogs. Veterinarians deal with this by cutting the nail at the break & then applying an antibiotic cream mixed with a little lidocaine to stop the pain. The foot stays bandaged for a couple of days until the sensitive tissue starts to heal. From here, the nail will begin to grow out & Jack will be back to his old self. Thanks for using Boop by Petco.

Ouch, poor Zoey! I would not try to remove it yourself, as it is likely painful to her and she may bite you due to the pain. I would try to cover it tonight, and put an Ecollar on her to prevent her from licking at it. Take her into the vet in the morning to have the nail removed. Hello. I'm sorry to hear about Romeo. Nail injury is fairly common. If you can get him to a vet soon, that is ideal. He will need to be sedated and the injured nail needs to be removed so it can grow back properly. If you are unable to get to a vet soon, you'll want to apply a loose bandage to stop the bleeding, but your vet should be seen asap. Do not give him any medications until you see your vet because they'll need to start from square one.

Just noticed my 5lb pomchi front left foot pinky toe bleeding/might of stopped but I think the hole nail is gone, have no idea how. Im a truck driver, so am not able to stop just anywhere (Truck stops & some a Walmart) so until I can get to a vet.. w
It sounds like he tore off the nail. You can stop the bleeding using styptic powder, it’s what men use after cutting themselves shaving. I would get a cone to prevent licking, they should have them at Walmart or PetCo. I wouldn’t wrap the foot but soaking it in warm water to clean it after it stops bleeding will help prevent infection. Leaving it open to the air will let it dry and toughen up. There is no safe over the counter pain medication, especially for a small dog like yours. This shouldn’t be that painful after a day or so, just limit the walking to short potty walks only. Poor O! He may have broken a toe or just the nail. Even breaking the nail can be quite painful. Leave it be tonight, and take him into a vet first thing in the morning. Rest him tonight. No running, jumping, or playing. Take him out to potty on a leash, and bring him right back in when he's done. Please do not give him any human pain medications, as many are toxic to dogs and can be fatal if given. In the morning, the vet can treat it as well as giving him antibiotics and safe pain medication. I hope this helps.

I wouldn't try to cut it yourself, it looks like it's broken back to the quick. This will be extremely painful for Choco. She needs to see a vet to get sedated and have it cut. Bandage it to protect it tonight, then have her seen by a vet in the morning.
