Is brown discharge normal for a dog 10 days after spay surgery?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Pembroke Welsh Corgi | Female | 2 years and 1 month old | 25 lbs

My dog was spayed 10 days ago. Two days ago we noticed she has a minimal discharge leaking from her vagina. It appears like old/dried blood (mostly brown with dark red tint) and has a mucus-like texture. She had gone into heat about a month or two before her surgery. Is this discharge normal? Should we take her to a vet right away?

This can sometimes occur 7-10 days after surgery as the suture starts to break down where it was tied near the cervix. As long as Riley feels good, and has a normal appetite, I would not be concerned. If the discharge hasn't cleared up in a day or two, you should have her checked out by your vet.
