Is mouth slime & tongue hanging out normal after dog tooth extraction?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Dachshund | Female | spayed

Good day. Our dachshund went trough her second tooth extraction today (other one was a couple of years ago). She looks much better this time round after the surgery. All her teeth was removed after a long battle with periodontal disease. Before there was some pus like substance coming from her mouth and there seems to be some more think slime persisting now after the surgery. She also has some trouble keeping her tongue in her mouth. Is this normal or should I be concerned?

Hello. This is all VERY normal after a significant extraction of infected teeth. A little blood mixed in with saliva is causing the pink slime, & Maxi will hopefully learn to reposition her tongue, but many dogs without any more teeth will keep some of their tongue exposed. She will be fine. Thanks for contacting Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach.
