My dog has hot spots & scratches raw. How to handle vet visits?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Beagle | Male | unneutered | 2 years and 11 months old | 40 lbs

Winston gets hot spots/allergy itching spots maybe twice a year. He’ll scratch & scratch or bite & bite spots on himself until it’s raw & bleeding. This is on his shoulder/neck & he continues to scratch at it. I’ve tried covering his paws but he takes shoes/socks/bandages off, tried covering wound but won’t stay. He’s also aggressive anytime medical assistance is needed which is very difficult. Vet trips are a nightmare & he always has to be muzzled. Trying to help him w/o that frustration.

Given the condition, he is going to need to be seen by your veterinarian. Antibiotics as well as an anti-inflammatory or anti- itch medi ation are likely indicated. The area should be clipped and cleaned also. A small tee shirt or e-collar (cone) may help prevent scratching or licking. Given current events, you may need to drive up to the clinic, drop Winston off then wait for your veterinarian to call you to discuss findings and treatment options. Your vet may dispense a sedative to give orally about 60 minutes before the exam.
