My dog keeps licking her raw leg. How to heal and prevent irritation?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Small (up to 22lb) | Female | spayed | 2 years and 6 months old | 13.1 lbs

My dog has been licking and biting her right front leg for the past three weeks. I recently noticed that the spot that has been bothering her is raw (see attached photo). What can I do to heal this spot and prevent further irritation?

First thing you need to do is get an E-collar (cone) for her to wear. This will never resolve if she continues to lick it. https://www.petco.com/shop/en/petcostore/product/well-and-good-e-collar You can then use this spray on the wound 3-4 times per day until healed. If it does not seem to be healing after about 10 days of treatment your vet should examine it. https://www.petco.com/shop/en/petcostore/product/vetericyn-plus-hot-spot-antimicrobial-gel-for-dogs

Place an e-collar (cone) on Bruiser to prevent licking. You can buy one from your veterinarian or at most pet stores. Leave it on until the wound heals. Monitor for redness, discharge, odor, lethargy or fever. If it doesn't begin to heal soon after the cone is in place, see your veterinarian for an exam.
