My cat's mouth is swollen, he's not eating. Could it be an abscess?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Mixed Breed | Male | neutered

My cat seems to be favoring a side of mouth, slightly swollen, not eating very much. When he rubs side of mouth that's swollen he kind of jerks his face around like he's trying to get something out of his mouth. He hasn't had his teeth cleaned and I do believe he may have an abscess. What do you think?

Thank you for contacting Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach with your question about Smokey. Poor boy! I agree, it does sounds like he has a dental problem, and it could be an abscess. It's pretty serious that he's not eating much, and he is likely in a lot of pain. I think it's best you take him into a vet now. I hope this helps!
